Raspberry Pi can now decode MPEG-2 video

In order to use Raspberry Pi as a cheap media player you have to install distributions such as Raspbmc or OpenElec.

The only problem is that this low cost board was primarily designed as an educational platform, so the Raspberry Pi foundation only paid for H.264 licensing, which meant you could not play back MPEG-2 Video due to licensing restrictions

But thanks to the raspberry pi foundation you can now purchase MPEG-2 license key by clicking on the link below which will take you to raspberry pi foundation website where you can purchase the license key.

You will need to provide your raspberry pi internal 16-digit serial number as part of your order.

In the GUI left click in the bottom left hand corner on the blue cross to display the options menu (Like the start button in windows)

Go up to “other” and then scroll down the list until you get to “terminal” and left click

You should now see the “terminal” window which is just like a cmd box in windows and enter the following command

cat /proc/cpuinfo

You will get the following

 pi@raspberrypi:~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
 Processor       : ARMv6-compatible processor rev 7 (v6l)
